In the Fall of 2002, Peoria Bicycle Club adopted a section of Grange Hall Road in Peoria County from Route 91 west to Evans Mill Road for the purpose of picking up litter. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Grange Hall Road, it is a major E-W Peoria County Highway that is used quite frequently by cyclists who are heading north & west out of Peoria Twice a year (spring/fall) club members meet on a Sunday afternoon from approximately 1-3 PM and walk the section of highway picking up every bottle, can, fast-food wrapper, cigarette carton, and scrap of paper we see along the way. On the rare occasion, we also find more “interesting” items like drug paraphernalia, adult toys, automotive parts, reading material, and animal carcasses.
In addition to giving back to our local community, volunteering for trash pickup counts toward your club obligations for the levels of membership as they relate to how much is charged for winter training and other club perks.
If you would like to volunteer for the next trash pickup OR have any related questions, please contact Kevin Lantz at firstname.lastname@example.org. Peoria Bicycle Club will supply trash bags & possible water/snacks for each pickup, but you are asked to bring gloves, hat, sunscreen, and clothing appropriate for walking in what could be a wet & grassy ditchbank.
